Lynda Crighton and the Scroll of Tielekku.
The last few days have been hectic and difficult, but they remind me why it was important for me to come to Paragon City. I got a call from one of my friends, Miriam Bloechl. She’s a psychic, and sometimes a bit eccentric, but her information seemed solid. She knows that I have a lot of superhero friends, and she wanted me to look into something for her.

The story is rather long though, so I have hidden it behind this link.

    Clothes make the hero...
I stopped by the Icon shop the other day. They've just opened up a few outlets in Paragon City, and they specialize in creating costumes for superheroes. Though I'm not remotely superheroic, I sometimes do think that it might be fun to try out a costume. What I really needed was something more practical for working in caves and ruins, and that's what I ended up with, but the Icon designer was really nice and just for amusement he worked up some potential "superhero" suits on the computer too.

So, here's my current outfit, and my new outfit. Here's one I didn't like, and some we made for fun: one, two, three, four.

    No laughing!

    The Fifth Column
As much as I hate the Circle of Thorns, in my time here in Paragon City I have seen several other mystic threats that cause me great concern. Just last week I was called on by Zilania to assist with a case she was pursuing against the Fifth Column, a group which still worships Nazi ideology.

Our first clue led us to tangle with the Fifth Column in the course of a theft. Their connection to the occult was obvious, when we ran into several lycanthropes. Obviously the vile group had been purposefully infecting their own soldiers with the curse! Fortunately Zilania's claws were more than a match for the werewolves, and she made short work of them.

After looking at the trail of thefts, it soon became apparent to me that the group was interested in performing an ancient ritual for reanimating the long-dead. We followed the trail to a warehouse where we hoped to capture them in the act, but the materials had already been removed to a secret location. We did find a sizable force still there, though, including vampires!

Combined with other information, we deduced that they planned to restore some of their greatest leaders of the past to life!

There was no time to lose, so the two of us descended immediately to find the site of the ritual and disrupt it. The complex was subterranean, and festooned with banners bearing the hateful insignia of the Fifth Column. We soon stumbled upon a group performing a rite of cleansing and preparation, certainly because they were readying themselves for the ritual! After Zilania defeated the lot of them, we discovered the corpse of a famous Nazi General, half a century dead, in a nearby chamber.

Needless to say, we were relieved to have stopped their fiendish plot.

    The Circle of Thorns

I got the opportunity today to go raid a stronghold of the Circle of Thorns with a hero named Gail Donovan. We didn't achieve everything we wanted, but I did walk away with some valuable new insights and a few books and artifacts that the Circle will no longer be able to use for evil.

Since I learned to cast a levitation spell on myself I have been toying with other ways to use it. One thing I came up with is to cast it on my digital camera. I have it enchanted to follow me around, so I can get photos.

I was shocked by the size of the Circle's lair. I had no idea they had come so far in establishing themselves here. It's a matter for great concern.

Portals like this one are a signature of the Circle of Thorns. This one is a simple teleportation portal, but others access worlds far from our own; dark places from which the Circle draws power.

Stones of this type can be used to focus mystical energy prior to a ritual. One like this can be seen in the MAGI office at Paragon City Hall.

This book is now in my secure library, where it will assist me in my study of the Circle's methods.

This altar is used for sacrifices. I've seen one like it before. It's not an experience I want any other children to have to endure.

I have a lot of research to do, but I think this foray was a valuable step forward in the fight against the Circle of Thorns.

    First entry
I decided to start this journal to better recall my time here in Paragon City. I arrived about 8 weeks ago and started setting up the store. I own a bookshop, The Nightingale Bookery, but really most of my business is with individual collector clients and institutions worldwide.

I'm a "dealer in rare books and antiquities," which is a fancy way of saying that I'm the person they come to when they can't translate something, or aren't sure what a particular artifact really does. I also help people find certain tomes or items, and handle the "safe disposal" of things that are a bad idea to keep around. The shop does some walk-in business in "normal" occult books and trinkets, but that's not really the focus.

I've been living at the shop since I arrived here. The Circle of Thorns and some other magical organizations are very entrenched here, much worse than I thought (and I'm a pessimist), so I've been incredibly busy. The superhero community here in Paragon is open to my help, though, so I have been able to do a lot of good. However that did leave me sleeping on crates!

So I bought a boat. It's not a big boat, but it's large enough for me to live on, and if I have to move around, I can take her to another moorage someplace. I named her Nightingale. Here are some pictures.

I will try to make more entries soon, but I have a lot of work to do here, so I might be a little sporadic. Onward!
